Typical power range

Systems are rated in both output (kW) and stored energy (kWh), commonly up to a few hundred kWh. Usable capacity is always less than the headline figure, so size against the number the provider will put in writing.

Sizing by energy, not just power

A battery unit has two numbers: how much it can deliver at once (kW) and how much it holds in total (kWh). A load that a diesel unit runs indefinitely will empty a battery in a predictable number of hours.

Work out the average draw across the job, multiply by the hours, and compare against usable capacity — which is always less than the headline figure.

Where they win outright

Indoor-adjacent placement, night work near homes, film sets, exhibition halls and any site with an emissions restriction. There is no exhaust and effectively no engine noise.

They also cover the long stretches of light load where a diesel genset would be running inefficiently.

Hybrid pairing

The common professional setup is a battery unit carrying the base load with a smaller diesel genset cycling on only to recharge it. The engine runs less, quieter and closer to its efficient load band.

Solar arrays extend runtime but rarely carry a working load by themselves in temporary deployments.

Fuel, runtime and refuelling

Runtime is usable kWh divided by your average draw. Work out the average across the whole job, not the peak.

Recharging comes from the grid, a solar array or a paired genset cycling on and off — confirm which is realistic on your site and how long a full recharge takes.

Solar extends runtime but rarely carries a working load by itself in a temporary deployment.

Noise and emissions

No engine, no exhaust and effectively no noise, which is the whole reason to choose this category.

In a hybrid pairing, the genset noise and emissions still apply — but only for the hours it runs to recharge.

Portability, towing and placement

Weight and footprint are the constraints. Check the floor, deck or ground loading before agreeing a position.

Units are usually delivered and positioned by the provider with a forklift or tail lift; confirm the access route and surface.

Delivery, setup, cable and grounding

Ask these before the unit is scheduled. Each one changes either the price or whether the job works at all.

What is the usable capacity, as opposed to nameplate?
Sizing on nameplate kWh is the most common way these jobs run short.
How is it recharged on site and how long does that take?
Recharge time is dead time unless a hybrid pairing covers it.
What is the surge rating for motor starting?
Inverter-based output has a firmer surge ceiling than an engine.
Who positions the unit and what does the surface need to bear?
Weight is often the reason a chosen position does not work.
